Many of us in the U.S. have a long weekend this week, so I am currently out enjoying Arches National Park. If you ever get a chance, I’d highly recommend a visit and getting a permit to hike the fiery furnace trail. It is one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done to date.
With that context, this is going to be a pretty short post, but I did want to send something out to keep my Sunday posting streak alive. I also don’t just want to post something low value just to post, so hopefully this at least provides a few things for you to ponder.
We all realize at some level that time is our most valuable resource, so how you spend your time is vital. I am realizing more and more that good is the enemy of great when it comes to time.
From a company perspective, there are tons of good things you could work on - hiring, a new feature, improving conversion rates, growing new users. The list goes on and on. The problem is, you might just work on good things all the way up until you discover none of it really made a substantial difference to helping you win. To helping you truly build something great and accomplish your goals.
To achieve greatness as a company you have to push past working on good things to working on great things. Greatness requires a strategy with priorities that you feel convicted will lead to winning. And that prioritization should hurt. It means you are doing less good things to focus on the few great things. It’s important to note that doing this doesn’t mean you won’t sometimes still lose and be wrong, but what it does mean is you’re doing all you can to try and win.
So my aspiration this week is to try to really do more great things and less good things. To be more cognizant of what winning is and stay laser focused on my strategy to succeed.
